Fiduciary governance & accountability

Fiduciary Committee Checklist for Employer Health Plans

A practical checklist for establishing decision rights, meeting records and repeatable oversight for an employer health plan.

By Corry Hull, REBC®, CSFS® — Vice President of Employee Benefits at BHC Insurance

A fiduciary committee should clarify how employer health-plan decisions are made, not add another update meeting. Begin with a charter that names the purpose, scope, members and authority of the group.

Use a checklist before each material decision: identify the question, evidence reviewed, alternatives considered, conflicts disclosed, decision owner and follow-up date. Keep the record concise and complete enough to preserve the reasoning.

Review the committee’s charter and membership annually, especially after leadership or vendor changes. A clear, current structure makes accountability durable between renewal cycles.
